 Just added a test plugin (modified from a version I found on someone's
 blog).  Uncomment line 43 to see output in the debug window whenever an IM
 is received.

 I've been reading about some of the history that led up to the problematic
 change thanks to the link by deryni, so I'm playing around with some
 possible fixes on my machine.  Will post if I get a working patch.
