 The original patch file I posted (comment 5) was bad, so I just reposted
 it.  However, over the weekend I was able to come up with an approach that
 I think might be better.  It uses conditional compilation, but with macros
 instead of embedded #ifdefs, so the code is a lot cleaner.  I built and
 tested it on Windows XP, and tested a sample program using the same
 technique (but not Pidgin itself) on a Debian x86-64 server I have access
 to.  But, I would appreciate someone who could test the patch under Linux
 x86 as well as x86-64, especially since the Windows build does not use the
 configure.ac file.
