 I use pidgin for years now (gaim previously) on different systems.
 I have the same issue described on the tickets with some contacts "not on
 server list" but be able to be contacted by them. (I can send to them IM
 by select them in "Buddies" > "New Instant Message"

 I constated a few hints which could help to fix the bug :
 - I use a yahoo.fr domain address
 - I have problem ONLY with other domains : yahoo.com, .co.uk, .co.jp,
 .co.tw, .it, and so on.
 - I don't know how, indeed, but some of my foreigners contacts became
 clear, I mean doesn't have this issue anymore.

 To add an name, we have to provide the name only, not the domain. So maybe
 pidgin doesn't know to search in others domains servers, where Yahoo
 Messenger does.

 I hope thoose points can help you to fix this annoying bug.
