 libpurple is used by quite a few programs now, and not all of them want to
 take advantage of its voice/video support. As a Debian packager of
 libpurple, I currently only have 3 options:
 - enable v/v support in libpurple, which allows pidgin/finch to have v/v
 support as well but introduces a large number of dependencies related to
 gstreamer
 - disable v/v support, which prevents pidgin/finch from having v/v support
 - provide two separate libpurple packages, one with v/v support and one
 without, possibly confusing the heck out of people.

 Ideally, gstreamer/farsight support would be in a plugin, which could be
 easily separated from the main purple library.
