 Since the new year, without changing anything about my Pidgin
 installations, I've noticed that this problem occurs less frequently, but
 it still occurs.

 Could it possibly related to insufficient handling of Yahoo servers
 availability?
 (i'm saying this related to those DNS resolution problems I've read about,
 that are not necessarily the fault of the user's internet connection)
