 I have had the same issue and I resolved this by doing the below, hope
 this helps :)

 check if you have a ~/.gstreamer-0.10 dir if you don't run

 $gst-inspect

 If you do have this dir first delete it and then run

 $gst-inspect

 Now try and run pidgin again
