Comment:

 He is having a gmx.de account and that domain is set in Pidgin, too. But I
 also tried it with gmx.net as domain. Resulting in the same error message.
 If I select .de instead of .net for my .net account, I will get a "not
 authorised" message. Could there be something blocked on his internet
 access? As my friend told me, when he went into a hotel with is notebook,
 he could login successfully there.
