Comment:

 The issue was that Microsoft wanted me to agree to their new terms of
 service, and provide some personal information. I resolved this issue by
 installing Windows Live Messenger on a Windows partition, and attempting
 to sign in. I was presented with a popup message which directed me to the
 correct webpage, and once I accepted the new agreement, I was able to sign
 in through pidgin again. Sorry for wasting your time.
