 Thanks, sorry I feel like a n00b now.  it is under the
 tools>plugins>windows pidgin options>configure plugin menu.  I have no
 idea how I managed to get that checked, I think I had double-clicked the
 taskbar on Pidgin and it started sometime after that, although I'm not
 quite sure that was it, because it doesn't seem to be doing it now.
