New description:

 and so on.  This works fine with most programmes including Windows Live
 Messenger, Word, Thunderbird and Mozilla.

 However, these key combinations produce nothing in Pidgin and I can't find
 any way to include these characters in messages.

 If I copy and paste the characters into my Pidgin window from elsewhere it
 works fine, I just can't key them.
