 On a new Windows 7 (x64) computer, the following happens.

 When I click on pidgin, windows security asks me if pidgin can make
 changes.  I click yes, and nothing happens.

 pidgin.exe shows up in task manager, but there are no windows visible
 anywhere.  No system tray icons.  My status does not appear online, so it
 appears pidgin never finishes loading.

 I've tried removing prefs.xml and even .purple, but it has no effect.
 I've removed my pidgin directory and reinstalled, no effect.
