Comment:

 Are you sure it's not hiding in the system tray?  There should be a button
 you can click to view all the apps that you haven't used recently (because
 of the ridiculous amount of junk in there on most systems, Windows uses a
 'only show the ones recently used' algorithm, and hides all the other
 icons behind a expander/button)
