New description:

pidgin 2.7.1 for Windows XP SP3

irc.prison.net has probably spotted me as
an idle hog. It begins to connect, and then
pidgin becomes unuseable, eating 89+% of
my CPU cycles, never completing the connection.
Could pidgin poll much more slowly, or use
blocking I/O on a separate thread, or something?
Could it detect the situation and emit an
 error message?

The interface freezes and the disk thrashes.

Some single way to trump all my auto-login
settings to off would have been convenient
for diagnosis. A command line option, or
 a global XML setting.
