Comment:

 GTalk *is* XMPP, so the type changing to "XMPP" is to be expected.

 What error are you seeing, exactly?  Is Pidgin *actually* crashing
 (disappearing) or is it just failing to connect?  Please attach the
 Help->Debug Window output.
