Comment:

 Try adjusting your firewall settings (in case Pidgin is blocked).

 If that doesn't work, then some other network firewall is interfering with
 Pidgin.  You can employ the same fallbacks the official client uses by
 setting the Connect Server to 'talk.google.com' and changing the port to
 443, and check "Use old-style (port 5223) SSL".
