 If it helps, there appears to be a time factor here.  I put my laptop to
 sleep last night at 1830 and brought it back this morning at 915 with no
 wakeups in between.  I reconnected to the IRC server without having to
 close Pidgin.

 Is it possible there is a cache that is only cleared after a number of
 hours?
