It looks like it is actually performing proxy authentication via NTLM (in
the same way that it does in Pidgin for the subsequent SSL request to
`login.yahoo.com:443`).
The reason it doesn't work in Pidgin is that we don't support proxy
authentication for requests on port 80, only requests that use HTTP
CONNECT on alternate ports. This is a shortcoming that we can't have a
complete fix for without major changes.
It is good to hear that the workaround works for you, hopefully others in
the same situation will be as lucky.
