 I have also been having the very same issue. Using the 2.6.6 I get the
 same error. I am on a corporate network. Works fine at home. The only
 thing is that if I install the Yahoo! messager program v10, I think that
 is what it is works fine at work. Just Pidgin at work over 5050 or 433 get
 connection refused. Is there a different between the Yahoo! software and
 Pidgin connection methods. Seems to me that Yahoo! is connection either by
 a different IP address or port number maybe 8080 if not both. We do not us
 a proxy server here but have a firewall that will block sites.
