 When doing the merge how? By dragging or by giving a buddy the same alias
 as an existing buddy?

 When dragging you control the ordering by controlling where you drop the
 buddy. When using the auto-merge feature I would imagine (though I would
 need to check to be sure) that the currently-being-aliased buddy is simply
 appended to the end of the existing contact.
