 Ok, so I found out there is a limit to the number of channels you can join
 on the server.  The debug log shows a "405 - You have joined too many
 channels" from the server.  Now the weird thing is that even tho I part
 from a number of channels, pidgin still receives the 405 TOOMANYCHANNELS
 error from the server every time I try to join a new channel.  I've turned
 off all my auto-joins and channel persistence, but it still keeps me from
 joining new channels.  I tried a couple other irc clients, they all hit
 the limit and back down from it without a problem and without continuing
 to receive the 405.
