 I'm on the ICQ network with the Windows client and I had the "unable to
 add .." error for some time now. After some reading I tried the Trillian
 solution and seems to work for me too.

 However on an additional note, immediately after connecting to my account
 with Trillian, I noticed that an Umlaut of one of my buddies was garbled -
 it was an ö. I changed that to an oe and the unable to add error in Pidgin
 disappeared.

 It also seems that Pidgin automatically translates oe to ö, as my buddy's
 name didn't change.

 Maybe this error message has something to do with
 [http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/1645]
