 Rather than do this on a per-protocol basis, could this not be added on a
 per-account basis by adding it to the Advanced account setup section?

 Allow users to either default to the current icon sets based on the
 protocol, or choose a new icon set from any of their installed icons. This
 way, there'd be no need to break/break away from current chat protocols by
 keeping everything purely client-side, and users who have multiple
 XMPP/MSN/whatever accounts can use different icon sets if they desire.
