Comment:

 According to sasl.h -12 is SASL_NOTINIT which means "SASL library not
 initialized", what that means here I'm not at all sure but I would check
 that the cyrus install is working correctly.

 Can you get the debug output from when pidgin starts up? Specifically, can
 you check it for any sasl initialization errors (should look like "Error
 (###) initializing SASL.").
