Comment:

 2.6.5 was probably fine because Pidgin scaled down the icon to small
 dimensions, which would result in a smaller file size.

 The AIM icon size is 7168 bytes.  If you tried setting of bmp smaller than
 that, with dimensions less than or equal to 100x100 then Pidgin should not
 have tried to convert the icon.

 You may want to verify the file size and dimensions.  If it definitely
 isn't working... would you be able to attach the image in question?
