Comment(by BoffinbraiN):

Indeed; this is trickier than I first thought. We have two completely
different usage scenarios here and two different mindsets. This is what I
 see...

 - Casual IM users on MSN, Skype and most other clients set their 'tagline'
to be whatever they want, whenever they want; this is completely
independent from their status. Taglines are ever-changing and there is no
 desire to remember previous entries.

 - Pidgin users synchronously set their statuses and message text so that
the message describes the status in more detail.

Setting a status message independently in Pidgin can only be done by using
a global status or by editing an existing saved status, which is a real
annoyance for people used to the more common interface design.

So, is it actually possible to reach a compromise? I'm not sure. I see
advantages to both use cases, but personally I use saved statuses for
 statuses alone and not messages.

How about this: we have the message box always visible. If a saved status
is used, its message immediately overwrites the message box, and
subsequently, typing in the message box will override a saved status
 message (but won't persist).

Critically, changing status should always take effect immediately
(satisfying this ticket) and should then focus the message box, like a
global status does. Any delay between changing status and updating the
 message is unimportant.
