 Update 2. So it seems my plugin pidgin-facebookchat was causing the
 problem. I remember reading somewhere that facebook had started using the
 jabber protocol so maybe this is why.

 Anyway, I removed the plugin and pidgin is now starting for me. Just have
 to figure out a way to connect to facebook chat now, but it's not
 essential.
 Haven't tried reinstalling the facebook plugin yet.
