 Does it work on a network where you aren't registered, or if you connect
 with an unregistered username?

 If so, try the [http://hg.guifications.org/purple-plugin-pack development
 build of the Plugin Pack] and see if that helps.  It contains code that,
 along with Pidgin 2.7.0, delays auto-join until after identification.
