 purple-debug-2.6.5.log shows a successful login to gmail (XMPP/SASL) on
 pidgin-2.6.5 (Mac OS X, 10.6, i386) built (fink) against the exact same
 version of the cyrus-sasl library used in the original post, when I
 reported the problem against 2.6.6.  Hope this helps some more.
