Comment(by sTony):

 I can confirm this bug.

 I'm running libpurple 2.6.2 on Ubuntu 9.10. The Error is

 SSL Certificate Verification

 Accept certificate for gmail.com

 The certificate for gmail.com could not be validated.

 The root certificate this one claims to be issued by is unknown to Pidgin.

 OR sometimes a bit different..

 SSL Certificate Verification

 Accept Certificate for gmail.com?

 The certificate for gmail.com could not be validated.
 The certificate claims to be from "mail.google.com" instead.
 This could mean that you are not connecting to the service
 you believe you are.

 .. clicking View Certificate reveals in either case reveals something like
 the following.

 Certificate Information

 Common name: gmail.com

 Fingerprint(SHA1):
 d1:02:32:5f:a1:ab:b0:65:d4:9f:de:4e:9c:89:62:25:05:c6

 Activation Date: Thu Mar 4 19:08:41 2010
 Expiration Date: Thu MAr 4 19:18:41 2011

 The message is in regards to my Twitter Account. Actual GoogleTalk
 accounts seem to work fine.
