New description:

 This is a fairly odd error. Running many tests in debug mode show that
 the data is sent, and received with the same amount of characters.

 However when pasting with a leading ", or a string with two different
 background colors, the entire message is not displayed at all on the
 receiving end. I have also tested the same on Gmail, the only other one
 capable to my knowledge that supports background colors, and the text
 comes through fine, and the display parses differently, so I can only
 assume that the display methods are different. The same thing happens in
 Pidgin as well as Finch, so It's very likely that the parsing problem
 occurs inside lib purple. I did not see anything in gdb when running it,
 and I do have the debug packages installed in Debian.

 This issue occurs both in Debian Sid and In Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) builds
 of Pidgin, finch, and libpurple. I have not corfimred this on other
 platforms. Both Debian and Ubuntu are running seperate versions of gtk2:
 2.16.6-1 and 2.17.11-1 respectively. Libxml2 and perl are both the same
 on these two systems.
