protocol icons entirely instead of make them into even more of a
misfeature than they already are.
While I understand the protocol-agnostic philosophy behind pidgin's UI
design, I think it's important to have protocol icons, and it's important
that they be meaningful.
The reason for this is, not everyone uses pidgin. It's true that when
you're talking to a pidgin user, it doesn't matter which protocol you're
using. But most of my friends don't use pidgin or any other unified IM
client, and they usually have a "preferred" protocol that I should be
using to chat with them. This is often GTalk, and rarely Facebook.
Before I hooked pidgin up to Facebook, this wasn't a problem. I simply
chose the "sub-contact" with the appropriate protocol icon and started
talking to them. But now, with both GTalk and FB in the mix, things are
less nice. Because their icons are identical, I have to look at the
contact's account name to figure out whether it's GTalk or FB.
Things will get even worse when you axe the protocol icons, as you say
you're going to do. Right now, at least I can distinguish GTalk from FB
by looking at those ugly account names, and use the protocol icons to
distinguish the rest. But without protocol icons, how will I know whether
"PidginFan2007" is an AIM account or a Yahoo account?
If you can think of a better UI design to distinguish the different
protocols, then by all means, axe the icons. I'd be interested to hear
about what you come up with. But please don't axe them just because they
happen to be inconvenient to support right now.
