 I have this on Centos 5.X running gnome. This is my fix,

 sudo ln -s <prefix>/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/hicolor
 <prefix>/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/gnome

 Adjust for your <prefix> accordingly.
