 300-400Mb.  Eventually, I am able to click on the system tray icon and get
 pidgin to come up.  When it does, cpu usage drops to 0 and sytems starts
 responding normally.  This can take anywhere from 5 minutes to more than
 1/2 an hour.  Clicking on any function in pidgin causes a spike in both
 cpu and memory.usage and there is usually a lag when selecting functions.

 05-19-2010
 Today tried upgrading to Pidgin 2.7.0 no help.  Then uninstalled pidgin
 and re-installed version 2.7.0, still no help.  Same symptoms.
