 if someone sends me messages (in this case through a miranda client)
 containing a "<" character directly followed by text (like "<test" or "<-
 test"), pidgin shows the message correctly in the chat window, but in the
 log it shows only a blank string instead of "<test" or "<- test".
 when receiving more complex pattern of < and > like "<<>>>><<><<<>><<<<-"
 also the string shown in the chat window is wrong... in this case
 ">>>><<<<-" while in the log its ">>>>"
