 So I believe you may have come across a rather unfortunate situation. The
 immediate resolution to your problem is to edit the prefs.xml file
 manually (while pidgin isn't running) and changing the list_visible
 preferences value from 0 to 1 and then starting pidgin. At that point you
 should change the pidgin preference for the system tray icon to 'Never'.
