New description:

 I have two Pidgin installations (both now 2.7.5). One was installed
 several versions ago and has been successively upgraded, the other was
 recently installed as 2.7.4 and has been upgraded to 2.7.5.

 In neither case have I created any custom statuses or modified the
 standard ones.

 The earlier installation has the following statuses:
 {{{
 Available,
 Away,
 Do Not Disturb,
 Invisible,
 Offline
 }}}

 The later one has the following statuses:
 {{{
 Available,
 Away,
 Be Right Back,
 Busy,
 On the Phone,
 Out to Lunch,
 Invisible,
 Offline
 }}}
 I would like to simplify the later installation so that it only has the
 same 5 statuses as the earlier version (I can always add others as saved
 statuses later, should the need arise).

 But I can't find any way to do this. Like others (reading other bug
 reports on the subject of status) I have tried shutting down Pidgin,
 editing accounts.xml and restarting, but any changes seem to be
 overwritten on restart.

 Ideally I would like to be able to edit the standard statuses via the user
 interface (so please treat that as a request for enhancement) but in the
 meantime I'd like to know how to make the changes by editing .xml files,
 or whatever.

 Thanks in advance.

Comment:

 When you have accounts from only a single protocol connected/enabled in
 pidgin the status selector shows you the possible status options that that
 protocol supports. When you have accounts from more than one protocol
 connected/enabled the status selector shows you a common subset of
 statuses. That first list is the common subset. The second appears to be
 the MSN list.

 Add a non-MSN account to the second configuration and you should get what
 you want.
