Comment:

 If you move your prefs.xml file out of the way (don't delete it) does
 pidgin start correctly? If it starts correctly at that point can you diff
 the two files see if any of the changes stands out? You are welcome to
 attach either or both prefs.xml files (or the diff) here if you want but
 do not need to if you aren't comfortable doing so.
