 Changing the local alias would not be correct as the local alias is
 exactly that an alias for the normal account username (many people set it
 to something like "me" or similar to avoid seeing username at example.com on
 XMPP/MSN/etc.).

 It would be possible to display a message in the conversation history area
 indicating that the UI may not reflect the change since you set a local
 alias which is overriding that but that seems a bit excessive to me for
 this scenario (not to mention potentially chatty and annoying after the
 first time).
