Comment:

 The input area needs to be big enough to display a little more than two
 lines of text. Your smiley is likely taller than your normal text so the
 line spacing needs to grow to fit the smiley so the input area needs to
 grow to still be able to fit two lines of text. Or at least that is what I
 believe is happening here. It might be possible to avoid this until we
 actually use the second line of text but I'm not sure how easy that would
 be to do (if it is even possible, it may not be).
