 Unless you are both trying to join the same muc room as "user" it is
 perfectly possible to talk to each other normally. You should be able to
 directly message your friend without issues. If that isn't working you are
 almost certainly hitting a Google Talk specific limitation on who is
 allowed to initially message whom (which they lock down to prevent spim).
