 This is most peculiar...

 The behavior I was describing is no longer occurring. Instead of
 displaying the "An instance of Pidgin is already running" error dialog,
 Pidgin now displays the buddy list (as it should).

 The only thing I've done differently (that I'm aware of) is running Pidgin
 from the command line in order to generate the debug log.
