Comment:

 Manually copying files from /usr/local into /usr/ is not a solution it is
 an awful hack that may very well break your system. If you have pidgin or
 libpurple files in /usr and are attempting to use a version of pidgin you
 have built from source then you need to make sure you remove the pidgin
 and libpurple packages that you have installed (they are responsible for
 the files in /usr).

 What goes wrong during ./configure? What error are you getting? Any error
 at that stage has nothing to do with the installed version of pidgin or
 with any protocol or with anything else other than missing dependencies.
