 I think what you're seeing is a timing issue.

 When connecting directly fails, the `_xmppconnect` TXT record lookup
 occurs to see if alternative connection methods are available.

 You'll see a `"Couldn't connect directly to %s.  Trying to find
 alternative connection methods, like BOSH.\n"` message in the debug log
 when this is happening.
