 This sounds like Google Talk is "pulsing" the nickname change. They do
 that sort of thing in a number of scenarios that we know of. If you get
 your friend to leave his Help->Debug Window open and look for stanzas from
 the server when the conversation window prints that message, I'm betting
 he will see a nickname stanza of some sort coming in at those times.

 There is a long-standing issue with Google Talk users joining XMPP muc
 rooms and changing nicknames that has to do with this pulse period (a
 period of five minutes I believe) which causes the room to be flooded by
 nickname change messages.

 If that's in fact what is happening then you are simply seeing the message
 in the conversation window because of the timing of the sign-on
 notice/pounce activation and the initial nickname change stanza and there
 likely isn't anything we can do about it.
