Comment:

 There is a session save plugin on the ThirdPartyPlugins wiki page which
 does this (along with much more) but it might be possible to use that as
 the basis for a plugin to do what you want and/or request that the author
 of that plugin support your goal as an option without all the rest of what
 that plugin does.

 Either way this is something that a plugin could perfectly reasonably do
 and that is likely how it should be done.
