 If this is what I am thinking of, that is a notification, not an IM, and
 it pops up because you have the "Psychic Mode" plugin enabled, this
 displays that notification when a buddy with whom you are not having a
 conversation starts typing a message to you. Disabling that plugin should
 make this message go away.
