Comment:

 Similar to the MSN thing, your firewall is blocking outbound connections
 to the google talk server on port 5222.

 You might be able to connect if you modify the "Advanced" settings of your
 Google Talk account setup in Pidgin to use a "Connect port" of 443 and
 check the "Force old (port 5223) SSL" checkbox.
