 Your assumptions were correct.

 As I had hoped, Google Talk seems to work fine with Pidgin today, ~24
 hours after the initial bug report.  If this starts happening more
 frequently, it might be good to investigate if there's some way to work
 around the problem when Google's servers are being ornery.
