 I think I experience this problem as well on Linux for: Pidgin
 2.7.3-1.fc12 (libpurple 2.7.3)

 HTTP Method server: gateway.messenger.hotmail.com[[BR]]

 Proxy type: Use GNOME Proxy Settings
