 I'm pretty sure this problem has existed since before 2.7.3-- I could be
 wrong, since I'm only now getting around to even looking for an open bug
 report.

 I've got confirmation of same from a few fellow users who also don't like
 the grouped buttons.

 I've already checked the FAQ for keybindings: how does one unmap /
 override a default mapping?  Modifying accels does not, as of the last
 time I tried it (2.6.x?).
